We’ve been lucky to have still great weather in Paris, so last Saturday we decided to get out of the city. My favorite weekend getaway places from Paris are definitely in Normandy area (Sea! Do I need to say more?), but this time we wanted to do just a day trip within a short distance. The town of Chantilly is only 30 minutes train ride away from Gare du Nord and it is definitely worth visiting to see the famous Château de Chantilly as well as the vast area of gardens and forest surrounding it.
Besides of the beautiful Château and garden, we were positively surprised to find so much more! In Domaine de Chantilly you will also find Great Staples and Horse Museum and in the Château the largest collection of antique paintings in France after Louvre in Musée Condé ! There is also a big horse racing stadium. The domaine hosts frequent events and we happened to visit the area just a day before a big automobile show and the area was full of old and new luxury cars for collectors. My husband was thrilled and I have to say the old cars have their charm.
Despite the beauty of the Château and all the luxury cars, the highlight of the day for me was certainly the visit to the Domaine‘s kangaroo yard! I have never seen a kangaroo in my life (there’s none in Korkeasaari, right?) and I was super excited. They are just so cute.
The town of Chantilly is small, but in the main street there seemed to be a few nice restaurants and terraces, boulangeries and boutiques.
Train ride from Gare du Nord with regional TER train cost 8.70 € one way. It is definitely money well spent, if only to breath fresh air and hear the sound of the trees in the wind (my obsession). We wanted to enjoy the beautiful day and only visited the gardens and forest (my quota for Châteaux was exceeded during a road trip to Loire Valley during Easter 2013 – Too many Châteaux ruins Châteaux), but next time I’ll definitely visit the staples and inside of the castle. Just waiting for my horse crazy sister to come for a visit…
Have a great week y’all!
